Happy New Year to All!

Here's hoping that 2011 was a good year and that 2012 will be even better.

Thought I would share a little humor about "getting older."

TODAY IS THE OLDEST YOU'VE EVER BEEN, YET THE YOUNGEST YOU'LL EVER BE, SO ENJOY THIS DAY WHILE IT LASTS.

Observations on Growing Older

~Your kids are becoming you...and you don't like them...but your grandchildren are perfect!

~Going out is good.. Coming home is better!

~When people say you look "Great"... they add "for your age!"

~When you needed the discount, you paid full price. Now you get discounts on everything... movies, hotels, flights, but you're too tired to use them.

~You forget names.... but it's OK because other people forgot they even knew you!!!

~The 5 pounds you wanted to lose is now 15 and you have a better chance of losing your keys than the 15 pounds.

~You realize you're never going to be really good at anything.... especially golf.

~Your spouse is counting on you to remember things you don't remember.

~The things you used to care to do, you no longer care to do, but you really do care that you don't care to do them anymore.

~Your spouse sleeps better on a lounge chair with the TV blaring than he or she does in bed.  It's called their "pre-sleep".

~Remember when your mother said, "Wear clean underwear in case you GET in an accident"? Now you bring clean underwear in case you HAVE an accident!

~You used to say, "I hope my kids GET married... Now, "I hope they STAY married!"

~You miss the days when everything worked with just an "ON" and "OFF" switch..

~When GOOGLE, ipod, email, modem.... were unheard of, and a mouse was something that made you climb on a table

~You tend to use more 4 letter words .... "what?"..."when?".... ???

~Now that you can afford expensive jewelry, it's not safe to wear it anywhere.

~Your husband/wife has a night out with the guys or gals but is home by 9:00 P.M. Next week it will be 8:30 P.M.

~You read 100 pages into a book before you realize you've read it.

~Notice everything they sell in stores is "sleeveless"?!!!
~What used to be freckles are now liver spots.

~Everybody whispers.

~Now that your spouse has retired ... you'd give anything if he/she would find a job!

~You have 3 sizes of clothes in your closet ... 2 of which you will never wear.

~~~~But old is good in some things: old songs, old movies, And best of all, OLD FRIENDS!!
Pass this on to other "Old Friends!" and let them laugh in AGREEMENT!!!
Diabetic Recipes Available From Extension
The last issue of For Your Information mentioned that Extension has revised the recipes on their diabetes website. Here is the article. Thought this might be of interest to those who have diabetes themselves or must help others deal with it.
REVISED RECIPES FOR DIABETES WEBSITE (FYI 11-09)
A newly revised version of Recipes for Diabetes website has been launched. Today 25.8 million children and adults in the U.S. -- or 8.3% of the population -- have diabetes. Because of the high incidence of this disease, U of I Extension offers this website with a variety of recipes with nutritional analysis for people with diabetes.
More than 80 photographs have been added that show what each dish looks like.
Please share this site with diabetes counselors, people with diabetes and their caregivers. The site was developed by Karen Chapman-Novakofski (Extension Specialist, Foods and Nutrition.
You can visit the site at http://urbanext.illinois.edu/diabetesrecipes/
Southern Region IEAFCS Meets with Carol Schlitt
Carol Schlitt graciously hosted the Southern Region group at her home in early December. Those in attendance were Ruby Lingle, Joy Richey, Lois Smith, Rusti Grogan, Joyce Pyatt, Janet Burnett, Martha Speir, Kathy Harrison, Milly Kaiser, Martha Winter, and Carol.
 Her home was beautifully decorated, and we got to see the brand new completely remodeled kitchen. Some photos of that will follow in a future note. After some delicious treats and a little business, everyone enjoyed lunch and a tour at Eckerts Orchard. It is certainly a great example of a successful and expanding family business!
If other regions have photos of their meetings, please send to me and I will post them also.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving--wherever and however you are celebrating it.
Received an e-mail note that this is also National Friendship Week. So here are some thoughts from the life member committee to all our IEAFCS friends.
They're written by Andy Rooney, a man who has the gift of saying so much with so few words. Enjoy.......
I've learned.... That the best classroom in the world is at the feet of an elderly person.
I've learned.... That when you're in love, it shows.
I've learned.... That just one person saying to me, "You've made my day!" makes my day.
I've learned.... That having a child fall asleep in your arms is one of the most peaceful feelings in the world.
I've learned.... That being kind is more important than being right.
I've learned.... That you should never say no to a gift from a child.
I've learned.... That I can always pray for someone when I don't have the strength to help him in some other way.
I've learned... That no matter how serious your life requires you to be, everyone needs a friend to act goofy with.
I've learned.... That sometimes all a person needs is a hand to hold and a heart to understand.
I've learned.... That simple walks with my father around the block on summer nights when I was a child did wonders for me as an adult.
I've learned.... That life is like a roll of toilet paper. The closer it gets to the end, the faster it goes.
I've learned.... That we should be glad God doesn't give us everything we ask for.
I've learned.... That money doesn't buy class.
I've learned.... That it's those small daily happenings that make life so spectacular.
I've learned.... That under everyone's hard shell is someone who wants to be appreciated and loved.
I've learned... That to ignore the facts does not change the facts.
I 've learned.... That when you plan to get even with someone, you are only letting that person continue to hurt you.
I've learned.... That love, not time, heals all wounds.
I've learned.... That the easiest way for me to grow as a person is to surround myself with people smarter than I am.
I've learned.... That everyone you meet deserves to be greeted with a smile.
I've learned.... That no one is perfect until you fall in love with them.
I've learned... That life is tough, but I'm tougher.
I've learned.... That opportunities are never lost; someone will take the ones you miss.
I've learned... That when you harbor bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
I've learned.... That I wish I could have told my Mom that I love her one more time before she passed away.
I've learned.... That one should keep his words both soft and tender, because tomorrow he may have to eat them.
I've learned..... That a smile is an inexpensive way to improve your looks.
I've learned..... That when your newly born grandchild holds your little finger in his little fist, that you're hooked for life.
I've learned.... That everyone wants to live on top of the mountain, but all the happiness and growth occurs while you're climbing it.
I've learned.... That the less time I have to work with, the more things I get done.
Time to Fall Back
The last day of Daylight Savings Time--unfortunately. Well, now maybe we'll get more work done inside the house.
A reminder--I have received notice to renew my net ID for campus e-mail. I'm sure those of you who still use campus e-mail are all on a different schedule for renewing the net ID. But don't forget to renew when you get the notice or you will lose the e-mail access.
M & M's melt in your mouth, not in your hand. That was the answer to Seniors Memory Test question number 20. Hope you enjoyed these memories over the past several weeks. If anyone would like a list of all 20 questions and answers, let me know. Send a note to ieafcslife@gmail.com.
There Will Be a COLA for 2012!
Here's some good news from NARFE.
Federal Retirement Annuities to Increase through Cost of Living Adjustment
Federal retirees will receive a cost of living adjustment (COLA) to their civil service annuities beginning in January 2012.  Retirees in the Civil Service Retirement System (CSRS) will receive a 3.6 percent increase to their annuities, while retirees in the Federal Employee Retirement System (FERS) will receive a 2.6 percent increase to their annuities.
To trigger a COLA for 2012, the average CPI-W for the months of July, August, and September of 2011 needed to rise above the 2008 average for those same months, the last measurement to trigger a COLA (for 2009).  It did, by 3.6 percent.  While CSRS retirees receive the full amount of the CPI-W increase as a COLA, current law reduces the FERS COLA by 1 percentage point for increases above 3 percent.
Because the CPI-W showed declining prices from 2008 to 2009, and while it showed prices increasing between 2009 and 2010, it did not show prices increasing back to 2008 levels, there has not been a COLA for the last two years.  But finally, we have some good news for 2012!
Under current law, COLAs for federal retirement annuities, as well as for military retiree annuities and social security payments, are determined in reference to the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W), which is calculated by economists and statisticians with the Bureau of Labor Statistics.  The CPI-W is the current index used for measuring increases in the prices of consumer goods throughout the economy.  It includes prices on all consumer goods, including food and beverages, housing, clothing, transportation, medical care, recreation, education and communication, and more.
The new CPI-W figure for September 2011 was 223.688.  The average CPI-W for the third-quarter of 2011 was 223.233.  This is the new reference figure for determining the 2013 COLA.
NARFE continues to support strong COLAs based on fair assessments of increases in consumer prices to protect the value of federal annuities from inflation.
Best regards,
NARFE Legislative Staff
Possible Good News from NARFE!
Here is some preliminary information on a possible cost of living increase for Federal Retirees this year. I believe the final figures will be available in a couple of weeks.
Federal retirees could receive COLA boost for first time since 2008
Federal retirees likely will receive a cost-of-living adjustment in December for the first time since 2008 -- a fact largely lost in the current debate over proposals targeting federal pay and benefits.
The COLA for federal retirees and Social Security and Supplemental Security Income recipients could be nearly 4 percent as of Dec. 1, based on the latest data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Consumer Price Index, a measure of the average change over time in the prices urban consumers pay for goods and services, rose 3.8 percent between August 2010 and August 2011, largely due to an increase in gasoline and food prices. COLAs are determined based on the CPI-W, a formula that takes into account increases in the CPI for urban wage earners and clerical workers.
The government publishes the annual cost-of-living adjustments typically in late October, based on the percentage increase (if any) in the average CPI-W for the third quarter of the current year over the average for the third quarter of the last year in which a COLA became effective. There hasn't been a COLA increase since 2008, when it rose 5.8 percent. This year's increase, if there is one, will take effect on Dec. 1, and will be reflected in retirees' first annuity payments in January 2012.
The increase will take effect automatically, unless Congress opts to block it through legislation. Observers don't think that will happen. "It's unlikely that Congress will block the COLA in December for federal and postal retirees and others who are eligible," said Bruce Moyer, chairman of the Federal-Postal Coalition, a group of federal employee and retiree organizations. "Despite the budget climate, election year politics will likely prevent that from happening."
Some lawmakers favor switching to what's known as the "chained CPI" formula to determine COLAs for federal retirees and Social Security beneficiaries. It is viewed as a more accurate measure of how people substitute one item for another in the face of a price increase. The result would be lower COLAs over time. Many federal employee groups, including the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, are concerned the joint congressional committee on deficit reduction will include such a recommendation in its legislative package.
"While we are pleased that Social Security beneficiaries and federal civilian and military retirees will finally receive needed inflation protection after a two-year absence, we know that the outlays required to offer COLAs paints a target on the backs of older Americans living on fixed incomes," said Daniel Adcock, NARFE's legislative director. "We fear that some lawmakers will use the payment of a reasonable COLA next year as an excuse to cut our future inflation protection."
President Obama in late September released a deficit reduction plan that proposes raising federal employees' pension contribution level beginning in 2013. Civilian employees already are working under a two-year pay freeze, and Office of Management and Budget Director Jack Lew has not ruled out the possibility that the government workforce will be called upon to sacrifice further in the name of fiscal belt-tightening.
I wonder, wonder, who?
It's been several days since we answered question #17 on our senior citizens memory test.
The answer is "Who wrote the book of love."
Three more questions to go. We'll get back to those soon.
How to Avoid an Inheritance Battle
Here is a link to an article recommended by NARFE.
We've all read about huge family fortunes squandered in legal battles between siblings after the patriarch or matriarch dies. While most of us wouldn't make national headlines regarding our estate-planning matters, the pain and destruction of inheritance feuds can be minimized, if not totally avoided. Interestingly, most of these fights aren't about money. More
President 2012
Martha Speir forwarded this--hope you enjoy it! We will get back to the memory test next time.
PRESIDENT IN 2012
Here we are, already discussing the future President of the United States , beginning with the Year 2012.
For those of you who would like THE VERY BEST choice for President, we have a solution: It is probably time we have a woman as President. One choice is a very special lady who has just about every answer to assist in helping us to solve our problems.
PLEASE give this a thought when you have a moment:  MAXINE FOR PRESIDENT!
Very eloquently put.............don't you think?
Maxine on "Driver Safety" "I can't use the cell phone in the car. I have to keep my hands free for making gestures.".......
Maxine on "Lawn Care" "The key to a nice-looking lawn is a good mower. I recommend one who is muscular and shirtless."
Maxine on "The Perfect Man" "All I'm looking for is a guy who'll do what I want, when I want, for as long as I want, and then go away. Or wait nearby, like a Dust Buster, charged up and ready when needed.."
Maxine on "Technology Revolution" "My idea of rebooting is kicking somebody in the butt twice."
Maxine on "Aging" "Take every birthday with a grain of salt. This works much better if the salt accompanies a Margarita."
"I'm telling you .... she's the perfect candidate." Here are some additional quotes.
"The only two things we do with greater frequency in middle age are urinate and attend funerals ."
"The trouble with bucket seats is that not everybody has the same size bucket."
"To err is human; to forgive, highly unlikely."
"Do you realize that in about forty years, we'll have millions of old ladies running around with tattoos and pierced navels?" (Now that's scary!)
"Money can't buy happiness--but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia."
"After a certain age, if you don't wake up aching somewhere...you may be dead."
"Under no circumstances should you take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night."
Grandparents Bailing Out Their Grandchildren
Two in three grandparents gave money to their grandchildren in the past five years. Most gave less than $5,000. But the median amount given was $3,000; the average, $8,661. So we’re talking about more than a juiced birthday card. Much of the giving was for education (26%) and major life events (21%).
This is an enlightening article. More signs that times are tough.
Answer to question # 11: Bob Dylan once advised us, "Don't trust anyone over 30."
Here is the next memory quiz question.
12. NFL quarterback who appeared in a television commercial wearing women's stockings...
    B. Kenny Stabler
    C. Joe Namath
    D. Roger Stauback
